Invisible Waves [ 2006 ]
Plot Outline: Having become a regular at BAFF, Pen-ek Ratanaruang has this time embarked on an ingenious thriller spiced with violence and black humour, closely supported by a large part of the technical team of Last Life in the Universe and a Pan-Asian cast including such names as Tadanobu Asano (Zatoichi), Gang Hye-jung (Old Boy) and the Thai star Toon Hiranyasup. Shot in Macao, Hong Kong and Thailand, the film features Kyoji, a Japanese ex-patriot working as a chef in a restaurant in Macao, who has just poisoned his lover who turns out to be his boss’s wife. It seems like the best time to take a holiday and Kyoji packs his bags and is off to Phuket. Fate, however, seems to be against him- like the waves- and the problems that crop up as soon as he gets to his cabin intensify at a dizzying speed as the spirits of the past return to haunt him. A surprising intrigue develops in which a mysterious woman called Noi and a no less mysterious passenger- addicted to karaoke- are also involved. An intricate puzzle with a successfully created atmosphere and existential frills, that sarcastically reflects the world in which we live, and which a priceless Christopher Doyle again photographs in surprising and carefully studied detail.
